Dame Kiri Te-Kanawa: Gesu Bambino by Pietro A. Yon

From Granny's blog yet again. She said she pointed this one out and said she didn't mind my nicking things as she'd nicked 'em from Youtube to begin with.

Dame Kiri Te-Kanawa is New Zealand's most famous soprano (though Hayley Westonra is the young rising star) who hit fame after singing in the church at Prince Charles and (the then) Lady Diana Spencer's wedding in 1982. She is widely credited to have one of the finest soprano voices in the world ...

The Kylie Show: The One

This purloined from Mark's Planet (blog):

Visually it's amazing... just a shame it has to feature Kylie's averager-than-average vocals... Madonna is hardly the planet's strongest singer but her voice is ten times creamier and a hundred times more distinctive.

In her earliest days the nasty Stock-Aitken-&-Waterman put Kylie through a Kylie-multiplication machine so never less than three Kylies were warbling at any one time on any of her records. Even when she did a part on a multi-singer charity record at the time (I really cannot remember which one). Someone once said she sounded like a thin-voiced budgie: to me she is more like a singing wasp captured in a jamjar. Nasty business!

Madonna: Santa Baby (Duplex & Scrubbs mix!)

... aye! Or summut like...!

Great stuff!

Purloined from M-filer's blog!

U2: With or Without You (Rattle & Hum)

Purloined from http://tchaney.blogspot.com:~~

Jethro Tull: Rare promo for Solstice Bells - 1976

This video was STOLEN from Bimbibie's site quite shamelessly. I'm not sure about the tune (it's very Mull of Kintyrish, if you know what I mean...) but the video is quite wonderful

Paul McCartney & "Wings" (why on earth did he name a band after a famous sanitary towel feature?) Mull of Kintyre

Zucchero: Senza Una Donna

In the UK this was released as a duette with Paul Young; this version is senza Paul Young, senza jarring English lyrics and much better!

Sonique: New World

Not sure about the tune; but the opening of this vid is tremendous!

Madonna: Oh Father

Madonna makes excellent videos and this is one of her best. Today's choice was inspired by photos on Jim's blog...

Monday, December 17, 2007

Sonique: I Put A Spell On You

This is her most famous song, a cover version of the 1957 track by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, also covered memorably by Nina Simone...

Sunday, December 16, 2007

Sonique: Feels So Good

"Sonique" was a pretty good athelete on the British Olympic Team... Then a club DJ... This is her best tune (I think)... let it go through the first few bars to the hook, to "and that's what takes me higher!" then it's really catchy.

Engelbert Humperdinck: Release Me

This (seemingly the original promotional video from 1967) is absolutely hilarious!

Tina Turner: Simply the Best

This is one of those classic records that peaked at #2 in this country (actually Wikipedia says #5 but whatever; point is):-... what was at #1 nobody remembers!

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Gareth (Gates) and the Kumars: Spirit in the Sky

Even the guy who wrote the tune said he reckoned this was the best popped-up version:

Jeanette: Soy Rebelde

This was Jeanette's first hit - way back in 1971 when Spanish TV was still broadcasting in black and white ... but this is a more recent broadcast...

Monday, December 10, 2007

Jeanette (Cria Cuervos): Porque Te Vas

Jeanette is Spain's easy listening star of the 1970s and 1980s. Porque te vas ("because you're gone") was a big Euro-hit in the mid-1970s when it featured in the Spanish film about "the lost innocence of childhood" Cria Cuervos ("Cry of the Crows") dir. Carlos Saura, 1976... Click here if you'd rather hear it in French:

Jeanette: Porque Te Vas (French Language Version)

Garland - Merman - Streisand: No Business Like Showbusiness (Judy Garland Show)

No it's not all a bit tu-ette (whatever you call a 3-person duette)... this is actually a fascinating clip of weekend-night American television from the 1960s...

Boney M: Rivers of Babylon

This 1970s pop song is a reworking of a Biblical Psalm (number 137) stemming back to the Jewish exile in Babylon around 2500 years ago!

Monday, December 03, 2007

Florence Foster Jenkins: Queen of the Night Aria

A tribute performance including her original ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-haargh high F bit!

Sunday, December 02, 2007

"Amazing Pipes": Queen of the Night Aria

This is the famous aria with the high F (over top C). Sung by a little boy (it was always intended for a grown woman; but this shows how the "treble" voice has... well, more treble than any grown soprano's...

Elena Mosuc: Queen of the Night Aria

from Mozart's Magic Flute opera...

I'd say this is the best version (of about 7 or 8 I personally "auditioned")...

Queen of the Night Aria: Met's Noh Drama Version

From Mozart's Magic Flute.

Madonna - Live to Tell

This is a track you will never see on a Madonna compilation. Because like "True Blue" it simply reminds her of her ex Sean Penn too much!

"Just for you London"

This isn't the "just for you London" I was looking for ... but hey...

Sade - Smooth Operator

Wow ANOTHER classic!

This ALSO lifted from Crushed by Ingsoc!

Blondie - Rapture

O! this is a veritable classic, too!

This also lifted from Crushed by Ingsoc!

Visage - Fade to Grey

This is a wonderful song.
This video lifted from Crushed by Ingsoc's blog - many thanks!

Whitney Houston - Step by Step

This is supposedly a different video from the "official main one" but that one was eejut "disabled by request" - WHY do people do that? It just means you and I will not get to see 'em. That's ALL...

Whitney Houston - Queen of the Night

Aren't those words telling:

I've got the stuff that you want
I've got the thing that you need
I've got more than enough
To bring you down to your knees...

Speak for yourself, Whitney, darling!

Britney Spears' Famous MTV America Music Awards 2007 Performance

THIS is that famously BAD performance.

I've seen a LOT worse, I have to say!

And so she's tubby? I've seen far tubbier. In what shot. The Sun newspaper managed to take a single split-second shot that made her look overweight. Throughout most of this she looks completely normal if a little uncomfortable.

Whitney Houston - My Love Is Your Love

I got Whitney's greatest hits from the charity shop the other day... I MUST say I was shocked at how good her songs are and how I knew all of them (something I could never say about the dreadful breathless-fluttery Mariah Carey). She has topnotch choice of material I can say that .... this is my favourite Whitney song...

Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's OK normal version

...this is the straightforward mix with the manic xylophoning intro...

Whitney Houston - It's Not Right (But It's OK) thunder mix

This is the mix I was listening to at home. I love the expressions she pulls, but vocally and on the vid...

Whitney Houston - It's Not Right (Rossi hardhouse mix)

This is NOT the Whitney we all know who sang "Greatest Love of All"!

Arctic Monkeys - A Certain Romance

On American TV's Saturday Night Live

Lifted from http://elquemuchoabarca.blogspot.com

Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No No No)

Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston - When You Believe

Why on earth does the great unwashed public seem generally to believe that Mariah has the better voice? Are their ears plugged up with wax. Come on listen!

Whitney Houston - Greatest Love of All

I think she has the best voice ever that I've heard live...

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

Mariah Carey - Vision of Love

Leona Lewis - Without You

Il Divo, Leona Lewis - Somewhere on Simon Cowell This is Your Life

Amy Winehouse - Love is a Losing Game (live)

Her celebrated performance (after all that stuff about her in the papers being a heroin and crack addict and running out of rehab etc etc etc)... at the 2007 Mercury Music Awards, London Town...

Barbra Streisand - Send in the Clowns

This is from her "One Voice" TV special charity gig in 1986

Sarah Vaughan - Send in the Clowns

This is one of my favourite Broadway Classics

Sarah Vaughan - Somewhere Over the Rainbow

From Dutch TV, 1958... this is her jazzy rendition of the famous song...

Sarah Vaughan is one of Amy Winehouse's founding influences ...

Leona Lewis - Summertime

From the X-factor 2006

Louis Walsh said this was the best version of the song he had ever heard!

Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This

Leona Lewis - All By Myself (X Factor 2006 final)

Leona Lewis - I Have Nothing (X Factor Semi Final)

Leona Lewis - I Will Always Love You

Mika - Relax

Mika - Big Girl You Are Beautiful

Hasn't this been made the "official" music of Ugly Betty?

Or something?

Mika - Grace Kelly

I really didn't know what to think of this guy when he first came out ...
But aparently he is third in that trio of Brit music stars to "break America": Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Mika... can anyone in America confirm whether or not this is true... has America heard of ANY of these three? If so which? And how famous actually ARE they over there?

Barry Gibb, Barbra Streisand - Guilty - 1981 Grammy Awards live performance

Gilles Vigneault - Il me reste un pays

Barbra Streisand - Hideaway

This song was written for her by Barry Gibb and I think it's one of the best original tunes she's put out for a long time...

Lily Allen - Alfie

NB this is not the same song Cilla Black sang for the 1960s film starring Michael Caine where she sounded like someone was poking her privates with the sharp end of a feather.

Kylie Minogue - Giving You Up

Also I think it is her most superior song...

Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major

Pachabel - Canon

Elgar - Nimrod (Enigma Variations) - Chicago Symphony Orchestra cond. Daniel Barenboim at Carnegie Hall

I've no idea what the "enigma" of the variations is meant to be... or quite why this most English of tunes should be named after an ancient near-eastern black dictator whose mother is credited with establishing the world's original Mystery religion... but there you go

Still this is music to make English men and woman cry in times of war. Or being many thousands of miles from home... type thing

I tried to find an English rendition but nearest I could find came from CHICAGO Symphony Orchestra... Daniel Barenboim is a v famous conductor.. even I've heard of him

Here's the blurb:

Daniel Barenboim with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, opening the 1997 season at Carnegie Hall in this gorgeously performed dedication to the recently deceased Sir Georg Solti. Solti was the previous music director of the CSO for many years.

Frank Sinatra - Autumn Leaves

To photomontage ....

Autumn Leaves JAPT Montreux 1975... Ella Fitzgerald & Co...

This ain't the version I'm familiar with ... but hey ...

I of II

II of II

Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald - You're the Tops

Wow! This was a find...

Nat and Natalie Cole - Unforgettable

Edith Piaf - Autumn Leaves

Wow doesn't she bring her unique vocal "turn" to this disc??

I got this one at home (not on 78, on CD)

Nat King Cole - Autumn Leaves

NAT KING COLE - AUTUMN LEAVES This I think is perhaps the best melody he ever sung...

Pete Doherty - Dream a Little Dream of Me

As performed kind of on spec at Filthy Mc Nasty's in London

Monday, August 27, 2007

Barbra Streisand - Somewhere

This is that famous West Side Story (?) song ... reinterpreted and put in outer space ...

Also probably the only thing approaching a proper pop video (ie not just film of her performing live or recording in the studio) she's ever made...

Mado Robin Sings "B6"

That's the B over (six notes higher than) top C... I post this here because I stumbled across some tripe online about Mariah Carey being the greatest singer ever... Which as readers of my regular blog will have seen rather wound me up... Mariah Carey, world's greatest vocalist??! I'm afraid that is simply not true. Though Mariah Carey can reach D7 (ie 2 notes higher than B6) her top notes are nowhere near as radiant as this lady's voice, which considering the pitches she's hitting, is fresh and clear as a mountain stream

The Autumn Moon On A Placid Lake

I have a traditional Cantonese music CD of that name... and this is the closest I could find to it on youtube

Nat King Cole - Mona Lisa

in full wondrous technicolour!

Is this shot on true film? Looks that way. Surely video from that age wouldn't have given anything nearly as lovely a picture...

Saturday, August 25, 2007

Bryan Adams with Celine Dion (live) Everything I Do...

(I do it for you)

Sorry but I have to say this... what on earth is she wearing on her bottom half?? In Britain in the 1970s we had porn magazines that didn't show that much..!

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid

Reprising Frank Sinatra's classic... hasn't Nicole Kidman got a nice voice? Far nicer than Beyonce/that woman from Newleyweds who played Daisy Duke/the other melange of American nothingness that diarrhoeas our charts

Hamster Dance

Don't know the artist's name but that is the name of this track

Glenn Miller - Moonlight Serenade

SURELY, MORE THAN ANYTHING else this tune is World War II? (To me it is, far more than anything by Dame Vera Lynn.) I've been wondering what this tune is called for ages ....

... and now I know...

I've found lots of Sigur Ros on the Blogosphere

found this one at Bluez0628's blog

Leftfield - Release the Pressure

Leftfield's Leftism is one of the supreme albums of the 1990s... it's as inherent to the decade as Pink Floyd were to the 1970s and this track opens that classic album

Enya - Watermark

Watermark was the first Enya album I ever got...

Enya - Exile

Although this music reminds me of being extremely depressed alone in a Norwich flat, living off toast and marmelade sandwiches and warming myself by a potato-waffles-style gas fire, I still think this is a top floaty, spacey tune

Enya - Angels

Enya - The Celts

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black vid

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

That hen-night classic! And here it is in full "original promo vid" 1979 glory!

Barbra Streisand - Left in the Dark

I've never heard of this song b4 ... and don't you think she ought to have had the director shot for that shot of her nose in silhouette? I honestly thought it was a Spitting Image production until a closer look and it was indeed actually her ... hmmm... well, here goes:

This isn't very good. In so many ways. You have been warned::~

Barbra Streisand - The Way We Were

Doesn't she look like Amy Winehouse's lost sister..?

What is it about Jewish girls and singing..?

This one's got one hell of a voice on her ::~

Amy Winehouse - F- Me Pumps

There really is a whole generation of young girls whose only ambition is to be footballers' wives ..!

Amy Winehouse & Charlotte Church ~ Beat It

This was extracted from Charlotte Church's show on Channel 4...

Notice how bemused she appears to be by Amy's rather bizarre rendition::~

Eddie Murphy with Michael Jackson ~ What's Up With You?

Eddie Murphy seems to think he is Prince. But ho-hummmmm...

Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson - Say Say Say

Paul McArtney wrote this. It's so much better than Michael Jackson's attempt at a riposte: the dreadful "Girl is Mine" Ukk!

Rockwell (feat. Michael Jackson) - Somebody's Watching Me

Yes! Michael Jackson himself provides guest vocals!

But only (strangely) because "Rockwell" happened to be the son of Michael Jackson's old record company boss ...

The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work

Brian Adams - Everthing I Do

Featured in the Kevin Costner film Robin Hood Prince of Theives, this is one of those songs that got plain annoying here in Britain. Because it hit number one and stayed there for over ten weeks. Which was very annoying.

Brian Adams - Heaven - Live in Lisbon

This is a live performing of the original which "DJ Sammy" (below) covered ...

DJ Sammy - We're in Heaven

For a long time on hearing this frequently as it rose and fell through the charts I thought I'd heard it somewhere before ... I was right. This is actually a cover of a BRIAN ADAMS track!! (See above!)

Sunday, July 22, 2007

Cafe del Mar - Open Your Mind

Rob Thomas - Little Wonders

This came from a Disney film originally

but I came across it at a blog called True To My Thoughts.

I like this tune ...

Eamon - (F*** It) I Don't Want You Back / Frankee FURB (F*** U Right Back)

Eamon - (F*** It) I Don't Want You Back

This was dedicated to Eamon's ex-girlf Frankee, who reponded in kind by releasing the very same tune at the very same time! His got to number one, her's sadly peaked at number three. His is the better vocal.

Frankee - FURB (F*** U Right Back)

Frankee's one came out at the same time as Eamon's song (above). Maybe the video's better, but I think he put in a much better performance.

Bat for Lashes - What's a Girl to Do?

Isn't this Lily Allen? Or is it a joke? Or something? I never know this stuff ...

Sting - English Man In New York

Culture Club - Church of the Poison Mind

This was before Boy George poisoned his own mind with all those drugs!

Obie Trice - Got Some Teeth

I'm not that much into "hiphop" but this is my favourite "rap" video of all time:

Candyflip - Strawberry Fields For Ever

This is a 1990s Generation-E take on the famous 1960s song...

("Candyflip" means a drug coctail of LSD taken on top of MDMA ("ecstasy"))

Beatles - Strawberry Fields For Ever

Look at this home-made video. It looks so 1970s! (I know it was shot in the late 60s, but you know how fashions grow from a 60s seed into an early 70s hippie explosion!)

Monday, July 16, 2007

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Tina Turner - Simply The Best

This is her best as well ...

Foreigner - I Wanna Know What Love Is

The "humming" introduction (what is that? a synthesized human voice? I haven't a clue) ... well that intro really got me ... couldn't for the life of me all morning figure what the tune was ... certainly not who it was by.

Finally I found it. Here goes. Powerballadtastic it is too!!

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

T'pau - China in Your Hand

This one went to number one in 1987 and sold more than any other single that year in the UK.

It featured heavily in last weekend's Power Ballad Sunday and has been circling round my brains ever since. I don't know why I'm posting up so much stuff that I find "annoying" ... but like most of it, I kinda like this one also ...

One radio DJ of the time said that T'pau were "like Margaret Thatcher; because everyone votes them in but no-one will admit to liking them..." Pretty good comparison, actually!

Monday, July 09, 2007

Michael Jackson - Liberian Girl

I think Liberian Girl is one of Michael Jackson's prettiest songs. Pretty being the operative word. Because it's musical candyfloss, as I'm sure the more puritanical musicologists among you will agree. Not worthy of the epithet beautiful; it is, nonetheless ... exceedingly pretty ...

Note how this "dedicated to Elizabeth Taylor" video contains all the great and the so-called "good" of the era ... circa 1989 ... including a particularly shrill Debbie Gibson ... Hollywood vulgarians the lot of them!

In fact so much attention is paid to the all-star cast of this video, the song's pracically drowned out behind their jabberings

have a look and see what you think
